BOOK REVIEW: “RAMADAN: LET’S AVOID THE LOSS BY MAJIDI AL-HILAALY”

This book captured the present rotten state of the Muslim community where a lot of people pray, fast, go to Hajj but still tells lies, backbites, etc. Apart from that, it calls our attention to the essence of worship. You will learn that Solat, Zakat, Hajj and other acts of worship are “just” means to an end and not the end itself. The book extensively discussed what the goal is and how to achieve it.

Muslims of today pray mechanically (devoid of calmness) without impact. This is because we treat Solat as the goal of worship meanwhile it’s just the means. The same scenario is for Zakat, Fasting, etc. Why does it become so hard to maintain our pace immediately after Ramadan? Even some high Iman die before the end of Ramadan. The problem lies in treating Ramadan as the goal of worship. According to the author, keeping Iman alive in our heart always is the goal of worship. This only will ensure that such act of worships achieves their intended purpose. He outlined so many ways to achieve this ultimate goal.

Technically, we can divide the book into two parts: the first part treated the ultimate goal while the second part urges us to keep that goal alive in Ramadan if truly we want to avoid the loss in Ramadan. The book will assist you to understand why people read thousands of Quran in Ramadan but can’t finish just a single one for the remaining months in a year (eleven months). You will also understand why two people will stand in the same row or fast in the same month but the difference between their rewards will be like the difference between Heaven and Earth (in distance).

In his concluding part, he urges us to implement what we have learnt in those preceding paragraphs to Ramadan. He left us with few paragraphs from the book of Hassan Albana stressing the reasons why we should keep our Iman alive if truly we want to benefit from Ramadan and beyond it. “Ramadan: Let’s avoid the loss” is a book I will continue to recommend for whoever wants to sincerely prepare for Ramadan and maximize the profit.
