This analysis on Female Genital Mutilation was as a result of my interest to use data analysis skills to help people get better insights on what they do, why they should continue or not and my interest in changing the world. The dataset used was collated by England in 2017–2018.

FGM,refers to all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for cultural or other non-medical reasons.(https://www.unfpa.org/resources/female-genital-mutilation-fgm-frequently-asked-questions#:~:text=Psychosexual%20reasons%3A%20FGM%20is%20carried,to%20increase%20male%20sexual%20pleasure.)

FGM is different from circumcision. While FGM is condemned by all religions because many believed it violates human’s right, circumcision is optional for fem ales in Islam. Unlike circumcision, FGM is a damage without benefit. FGM is cutting part or sealing part of female genital part which subjects her to pain. Girls are most commonly cut shortly after birth to age 15. Some sources maintain from birth to 49.

Somalia accounts for the the country in Africa with higher number of FGM cases, while Eriteria follows then Nigeria. This shows that in a month, the Somalia people do carry out FGM on their females.

A critical look at the dataset too revealed that, type 1 among other types of FGM is the most common types in all countries in Africa which are under review.

Also, it is worthy to state here that among 17 countries examined in Africa, 4 of them (Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan and The Gambia without any order) usually practice reinfibulation, the practice of sewing the external labia back together after deinfibulation.

Lastly, research proved that many countries has declared FGM has a crime and banned it. For instance, Nigeria banned it in 2015. However, as at 2018, the practice still continue.
